In June 2001, Cardinal Bernard Law, archbishop of Boston, perhaps the most staunchly Catholic of all America's big cities, filed a routine court submission in response to a number of allegations contained in lawsuits brought against one of his former priests, Father John Geoghan.

At the time, sexual abuse of minors by Roman Catholic clerics was not a widespread topic of discussion, in the US or anywhere else. Cases would surface, and sometimes be quite extensively reported: in 1981, Father Donald Roemer pleaded guilty to child molestation in Los Angeles; in 1985, a Louisiana priest, Gilbert Gauthe, was convicted of similar offences against 11 boys. But they were seen, for the most part, as isolated incidents. There was no convincing evidence of any consistent pattern of clerical abuse, still less of a sustained attempt by the church to cover up such behaviour � by simply moving priests on without informing the authorities.

The Survivors Healing Center of Santa Cruz is working to increase local awareness of sexual abuse by trying to raise at least $50,000 in donations before a three-year grant from the county's Juvenile Probation Department runs out in June. Top public schools 'fail' new inspections

The majority of people think that the Catholic Church should give up control of the country's primary schools, it has been revealed.

A poll published in the Irish Times found that 61 per cent of respondents are in favour of this, while 28 per cent want the church to remain in charge.

Sexual abuse in early childhood most often happens in a familiar place and with familiar people. This implies that abuse often occurs at preschools. Not only are perverse adults the culprits, but often older children abuse younger children.

According to Focus on The Family in its book Baby and Child Care From Pre-Birth Through the Teen Years (Tyndale Publishing, 1997), the incidence of child-to-child sexual abuse is on the rise. The older child is often a victim of sexual abuse himself or is allowed to view inappropriate material on TV or computer.

There are a lot of people out there who believe in religion but don�t believe in God. These are the churchgoers and church-leaders that are the least criticized and least taken to task in most religions. One reason is, they have most of you fooled.

Recently the Irish Catholic Church have been revealed as having covered up cases of child sexual molestation from 1975-2004. Given the far-famed and infamous history of the Irish as a bunch of drunken brawlers just looking for a reason to fight, I am mystified as to how they could pass this up. Is there any better reason for Danny Boy to smash his way into his Church�s office and take Bishop O�Reilly to task? A lot of you look upon that guy seen carrying little Shaniya Davis away as being despicable, but will remain silent when this happens in your very building of worship. What�s going on here is, the churches are the original promoters of "Image is Everything" and the direct result of that is something I call RSM (religiously sanctioned molestation).

SO the Hierarchy is "deeply shocked by the scale and depravity of abuse" as described in the Murphy report, and "humbly" asks forgiveness. And the Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin, a man called Eamonn Walsh, condemned by Judge Yvonne Murphy for his "inappropriate" handling of a complaint of sexual abuse, says "If I'd done any wrong, I'd be gone." The Bishop of Galway, a man called Martin Drennan, tells us that Judge Murphy's report "says nothing negative about me".

She had nightmares and was scared that her house would be burnt down and then she began to cry and tell her beloved teacher, "Miss Naty" the big bad secret about the bad thing that her "Uncle Ben" did to her. Miss Naty, was then shown calling the police and the children broke into loud cheers and clapping when the police woman "Josie" popped up waving a baton to bonk Uncle Ben and chase him off the scene.

These scenes are from the famous Preda-Akbay Puppet Show operated by a group of young teenage students who are defenders of children's rights in the Philippines.

CONCERNS about child safety or possible abuse must be reported immediately to the state authorities, according to a new policy document issued in the past week by the diocese of Kildare and Leighlin.

The policy is designed to safeguard children and help those working with them. Entitled Safeguarding Children: Policy and Procedures, it is the result of a review process which followed on from the earlier publication of revised national guidelines by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church (NBSCCC).

The New South Wales Government is hailing its sex offender monitoring program a success with plans to buy more of the GPS ankle bracelets used to monitor convicted offenders.

The Government will buy another 20 tracking devices after nine convicted offenders were returned to jail because the GPS system gave their location as around schools or parks.

Corrective Services Minister John Robertson says the purchase doubles the capacity of the program.
