Examining the Crisis

Many people, including bishops, date and lable the "Crisis in the Catholic Church" to Jan. 6, 2002 when The Boston Globe began publishing its series about sexual abuse of minors by priests and revealing the conspiracy of bishops in covering up crimes.

That was the flash point of a worldwide scandal. The crisis it epitomizes is more profound.

The secret secret of the Vatican

Coverup'sflag_greatbritain Tag: england

The Vatican's policy on paedophile priests was so secret that not even the bishops knew about it

Was there a centrally organised cover up of child abuse within the Catholic church? This is one of the main charges against the institution. I don't believe it myself; I think there were disorganised and decentralised efforts to conceal scandal, just as there are in almost any organisation which discovers paedophiles working for it, from Islington Council to the United Nations.

It doesn't excuse the efforts that were made, but it doesn't suggest, either, that the Vatican is a uniquely wicked institution.

ROME, (Zenit.org).- If bishops in Italy have been responsible for covering up abuses committed by clergy in the past, these are mistakes that will be corrected, says the president of the Italian bishops' conference.

Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco affirmed this Friday in a press conference at the closing of the 61st General Assembly of the Italian bishops.

Italy sex abuse scandals ‘possible’

Coverup'sflag_italy Tag: italy

It is “possible” that some cases of sexual abuse by priests have been hushed up in Italy, as they were in Ireland, a Catholic cardinal said yesterday.

If it is true “it is an error and it must be corrected,” Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco told reporters, adding that such scandals should never be allowed to happen again.

RIO DE JANEIRO — The Rio de Janeiro archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church said Wednesday that a Polish priest accused of sexually abusing a boy was suspended two years ago when the allegations against him first surfaced.

Adionel Cunha, a spokesman for the church, said a statement released last week indicating that Marcin Michal Strachanowski was suspended after his arrest was ordered last Thursday "was not clear."

The Catholic hierarchy can heal the church by opening itself to change

By Allen Rose

If you have ever driven by the papal nuncio's residence on Massachusetts Avenue, you may have seen a man standing in front who is protesting about priests who sexually abuse children. I do not know this man.

But his public protest, and the thousands of personal stories from victims, demonstrate that the sex-abuse scandal in the Catholic Church is about people who have been harmed, and about an institution that for decades attempted to pretend that no harm had occurred.

Clerical Abuse in the Catholic Church in Ireland

In this emotianal clip Michael O Brien, a child who lost his mother as a child, and his father was forced to hand him and his siblings over to be cared for by the church, speaks out about the abuse he suffered at the hands of "men of god".

I will most likely do a video on this issue in the future as it is a very serious aspect of what can happen when absolute power is handed over to religious institutuons.

Anyone who has any questions about this clip or about what happened in Ireland from the 1930's onwards leave a comment or message me.

Australia archbishop: Church culture tied to abuse

CANBERRA, Australia — The Roman Catholic Church's culture of discretion and focus on "sin and forgiveness rather than crime and punishment" were among ingrained factors that ultimately led to the child sex abuse scandal and cover-up surrounding the church today, a pre-eminent Australian bishop said Monday.

Last week, Sean Brady stepped forward as Ireland's ecclesiastical answer to Gordon Brown. (Not that anyone asked for one, but still.) Recently exposed for his part in the hushing up of young boys abused by Fr Brendan Smyth in the Seventies, and facing calls for his resignation, the Archbishop of Armagh promptly did a Gordon and described himself as a "wounded healer", before asking for time so that he could "pray, reflect on the Word of God, and discern the will of the Holy Spirit".

Now, as luck would have it, the Almighty seems to have come up with the answer that his representative in Armagh should stay on.

German churches, child protection agencies and officials have said that they opposed legal action against people who fail to report child abuse cases, many of them linked to Roman Catholic clergy.

“There’s general consensus amongst the table that there shouldn’t be any new penalty,” Germany’s justice minister said. “We’re thinking of the victims. They have to trust that they won’t be called by police, before they are ready.”

Corruption is never harmless, in the Church or state

Coverup'sflag_australia Tag: australia

CORRUPTION is the most serious moral scandal of our time. Why? Because corruption is a double-edged sword, a moral evil that may turn one chump's decision to bribe, extort or otherwise abuse his power for personal gain into destruction of the very systems that order our society and make this country great.

Cracks in the wall of the curia

Examining the Crisis

The Roman Curia is the Vatican bureaucracy. Most people know little about the men who run the curia. But press coverage of the clergy abuse crisis is closing in on cardinals whose blunders in the clergy abuse crisis have begun to draw criticism from other Princes of the Church.

As words fire back and forth in the press, the wall of secrecy that traditionally surrounds the curia is showing cracks.

Look Back: Bishop Dupre scandal

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - One day after his resignation, Bishop Thomas Dupre was faced with allegations of sexual abuse. He would never truly ‘face’ the allegations, because that very same day he went into hiding.

In February 2004, after nine years on the job, he unexpectedly resigned from his post, citing health reasons. The very next day, allegations surfaced that Dupre molested two men in the 1970s, when they were 12 and 16 years old. He was indicted on two counts of child rape, but prosecutors didn't pursue the charges because the statute of limitations had expired.

A GLARING omission in your May 14 editorial “After Hingham school errs, archdiocese makes amends’’ is that perpetrators of child abuse have once again not been held accountable by the Boston Archdiocese.

We sadly remember Cardinal Law’s practice of transferring priests who sexually abused children from parish to parish, rather than dealing directly with the problem by removing the abusing priests from the ministry and holding them accountable.

Archbishop Wilson has just been re-elected as chairman of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference, and is widely tipped as a possible successor to the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, if Cardinal Pell leaves Sydney to take up a senior post in the Vatican.
